ALERT: Florida Legislature Considers Teaching Alternative To Evolution

We need your help. The Florida house of representatives voted to give special protection to teachers that teach the controversy about evolution, but failed to protect those who want to explore geocentrism. Here's the story from NPR's Morning Edition on April 29, 2008.

Rep Hays

Representative Alan Hays, soponsor of the bill said "What are you afraid of? Are you afraid that our students are going to learn to critically analyze a theory?" He also claimed that Darwin wouldn't object to critically analyzing the theory of evolution and that "A true scientist is searching for the truth."

Our Efforts

We're lobbying Representative Hays and the other members of the education committee that voted for this while leaving out protections for those who present alternatives theories to heliocentrism with a letter writing campaign. In your letter, feel free to mention that geocentrism should be protected, just like any other scientific theory, that the controversy around heliocentrism has been raging longer than that around evolution, and that you support academic freedom. Let me know if you get a response.
